Zannel begins

Every day there is an announcement in the blogs about another mobile social network.  Location-based service.  Profile sharing network.  Automated RSS feeder to phones.  It’s an exciting and heady time.  Also, one with too many companies chasing too few good ideas. Now, along comes Zannel. So what are we about and what does it matter anyway?

Our mission is simple – to be the easiest way for users to experience and share content with anyone with a mobile phone.  So what does that mean?  Well, right now there’s a ton of great content on the web – viral videos, photo collections, MP3s, games, etc., but only a trickle of this content makes it on mobile phones.  Even if you find a way to get the stuff on your phone via Bluetooth or a high-speed data cable, how the heck do you share it?  MMS – too expensive and no feedback loop if your friends got it or not.  SMS – great for text, but not for multimedia content sharing.  Online social networks – nope, not there yet.  Therein lies Zannel’s opportunity and vision – to be the first large-scale mobile entertainment network that makes content sharing on mobile phones as simple as falling off a log (and not getting hurt).

Over the next few months, you’ll be hearing more from us about how Zannel works…our viral mobile content sharing technology…our line-up of top artists that are embarking on new territory – users, not content companies, programming their own mobile entertainment channels to broadcast to 210 million US subscribers…and our partnerships with major content networks and carriers.  You’ll also hear us weigh in on the latest mobile business, content, and technology trends.  Sometimes we’ll get it right; oftentimes we won’t given how fast the mobile market evolves.  No matter what, you’ll always get from us an informed opinion and a healthy sense of humor.

I’m a lucky guy because I founded a company with the team that built the largest US mobile media platform, and ran the largest US connected mobile gaming platform.  Lots of big brains and ideas, not big egos – just a close-knit group passionate about building great mobile products.

So that’s our vision.  Our team.  Let the journey begin.

Zannel Mantra

Our mantra at Zannel is “keep it simple stupid!” Actually, it’s something we have to keep reminding ourselves. It’s not hard to build a product full of features, but it’s incredibly difficult to build one that is intuitive and inviting.

We’ve been struggling with this over the past couple months as we see potential competitors launch their services. The urge to add more features to differentiate ourselves is nearly irresistible. The only thing saving us now is our limited engineering resources.

Thank God for limitations. The last thing we’d want to launch is a product crammed full of every new feature we have on our product roadmap. I think we’re doing a good job, but the proof is in the pudding, which right now is still in the oven.
