Zannel CEO interviewed at Mobilize 2008

Zannel CEO, Adam Zbar, was recently interviewed by Kevin Tofel at GigaOM’s Mobilize conference.  Mobilize is an annual meeting of industry professionals to discuss the future of broadband mobile web as well as to look at the latest in mobile applications.  Adam was asked a few questions about Zannel and what people are doing with media and their mobile phones.  Here’s what he had to say:

Zannel at LoveFest in San Francisco

A group of Zannelers are having the time of their lives at LoveFest in San Francisco.  LoveFest is a big street fair/parade where all profits go to charity. The theme is loosely based on the Summer of Love (1969) and the happenings at the intersection at Haight-Ashbury.  People come in 1960s regalia, hang out for the day, listen to music, and watch a parade of events.

You can check out our event coverage here:

The Feed – Zannel how you like it!

We released a big improvement to your main Zannel page today, the personalized Feed.  The Feed is a place where you can see the stream of Zannel activity that is most important to you.  Comments, friend posts, posts from people you are following, or your own posts all show up in that section, and you can configure it to show just what you want.  Click on the “feed settings” link to adjust what shows up in your feed.

If you want to see things as you did in the old version of Zannel, you can just select “your updates” in the settings to only see your posts in the Feed. Or click on the “my updates” tab in the top nav bar to see your posts.  But maybe you want your feed to display your comments and your friend’s posts? Change the settings, the choice is up to you.  Go nuts and try it out.

Ultimately the Feed is a way to make Zannel more relevant to you and your group of friends so you get a better snapshot of what is going on and what people are talking about.  Let us know what you think.  We’re all ears.

Study: Omitting cell phone users may affect polls

Many of the glut of presidential polls might be skewed by a couple of points or so because they fail to account for voters—especially younger ones—who have cell phones, but not wirelines, according to a report from the Pew Research Center. In its study, Pew said it found registered voters under age 30 who use only cell phones were more likely to be Democrats than those who also have wirelines. We’re going to BlogWorld in Las Vegas

Which I always think of as “Lost Wages” although - in truth - I don’t gamble worth a d*mn - too easily distracted by the sizzle and flash of what else is going on to concentrate on the task at hand I guess!  I admire people who can concentrate and in fact know people who can count cards and who have been kicked out of casinos as a result.  But I digress.

Zannel is one of the sponsors of this year’s Blog World ... although this makes it sound like this is a show of long-standing tradition when in fact this is only year 2 of the show.  We’ve got a smallish booth but will be livecasting from the show floor.  If you’re a blogger interested in getting started with nano blogging - which is what we like to call our version of microblogging - 140 characters + a picture or video - be sure to drop by our booth.  You can find us easily - we’ll be wearing shirts that say “Nano Bloggers Wanted” on the back of them plus the Zannel logo.

Zannel goes to the DNC and gets on CNN

If you’ve been following the Democratic National Convention, you may have noticed that 13 or so credentialed bloggers have been Zanneling from the convention floor.  We’re excited about this ... not just because its great for Zannel and the Zannel community ... but also because it shows how far micro blogging - what we here at Zannel like to call nano media - has come in just a short while.

For perspective, Howard Dean’s campaign was widely seen as a game changer:  his was the first to use the web and social networks as a major campaign tool.  Senator’s Obama’s campaign has taken web tools and social networking to a whole new level.  So it was no surprise to us to see media outlets like CNN latch onto the fact that the new game changer is both social, mobile, and nano in size.  You can see and experience highlights of the convention - and really feel like you are there - just by following the Politics Blue channel at http://zannel.com/PoliticsBlue ... this is nano content also called micro blogging at its best - painting a full experience in as little as 140 characters plus a picture and/or video.

CNN loves it.  I hope you do too!

A 9-to-5, At-work adventure on the Mighty Mississippi

This Wednesday (also know as tomorrow) Zannel, along with Cordarounds.com, embarks on another 9 to 5 adventure that will transport cube confined professionals on a day long virtual escape to America’s mightiest, and currently swollen, waterway – The Mississippi.

Leading the voyage is video blogger, Bill Bowles, who’s taking the entire summer to float the length of the Mississippi. He’ll be welcoming viewers to participate in a typical river workday at Evangeline Inc. (the name of his homemade pontoon boat). Water cooler gossip, conference calls, and encounters with the rogue Evangeline IT specialist are all on tap for a day at this floating workplace. And vigilant viewers might even win a lovely, and phonetically challenging, t-shirt from the crazed designers at cordarounds.com.

Watch it all here:

Previous 9-5 adventures have goaded San Franciscans into ditching work to join the Pied Piper of Booze on a day-long bender.  Another interactively tracked down a Valentine’s day date for a single woman.  And we’ll just have to see what happens at this floating office drifting in the middle of America’s iconic waterway.  We sincerely hope no one gets fired…

Series B Closed - Zannel marches forward

You can read all the press friendly details in today’s Series B press release,  but the big news is that we’ve officially closed our second round of financing with Alloy Ventures joining our series A investors - U.S. Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures - with a total of 10 million dollars in new investment.

Needless to say, we’re thrilled to have Alloy joining the Zannel team.  The new investment is going to enable us to accelerate our forward momentum and expansion in the mobile space, and keep those new features and platform improvements coming at a furious pace.  Or, in the much more eloquent words of Zannel’s CTO Braxton Woodham, “We’ve just begun to scratch the surface of mobile’s potential, and will continue to pioneer new ways for our users to stay connected via their mobile devices.”

Sometimes it just takes a quote from your CTO to make it all sound nice, but, suffice it to say, we are genuinely thrilled to be moving forward with such a great new investing partner as the mobile space gears up for massive growth in the coming years.

Winning Hearts and Minds

With all the well-publicized mishaps in the U.S. war against terror, we rarely hear about the efforts of the soldiers on the ground that are given the difficult task of actually engaging with and rebuilding war torn communities.  The series titled, “Winning Hearts and Minds” is a chronicle of the 321st Civil Affairs Command in Afghanistan.  This team is charged with challenging and critical responsibilities that include: restoring power grids and sewer lines, getting hospitals and schools up and running, and partnering with the local government to make everything happen smoothly.  A tall order indeed…

Check out the Hearts and Minds channel to see the first installments of the continuing series.
