Web navigation bar enhancements now live

Based on community feedback, we’ve been working to improve the navigation interface on the web.  We’ve just released a simplified top nav bar looks like this:

All the links of the old nave are still there, just in slightly different configurations.  The new top nav addresses two separate issues. First, we wanted to visually simplify the page layout.  Consolidating all the various links from the previous top nav bar was a great way to do that.  Secondly, by consolidating links in the top nav, we’ve simultaneously made more room on the page for what’s important, namely all the…

Get a virtual ticket to Sundance!

Probably the second most exciting event happening this month (after this weeks inauguration, which you can see here: Inauguration09 ) is the venerable Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The weeklong event showcases the best independent films from all over the world. Not surprisingly, the festival also packs in celebrities, promoters, paparazzi, and party crashers into the usually quiet mountain ski town.

While being there in person may be your first choice, you can also get an on the ground look at the festival by checking out Zannels Sundance Channel.  This channel…

    2009 Inauguration

Today is a historic day for the US, as Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. It marks a leap forward in race relations for the US, and a hope for major change in our approach to foreign policy, the economy, and how we approach such issues as energy and health care.

To capture the Inauguration Day, a group of Zannel’s political bloggers are braving DC’s cold weather and posting live updates to http://zannel.com/inauguration09.  Watching the channel, it’s been fascinating to see the day’s events unfold from different points-of-view, and how mobile blogging…

    New post tagging features

We just released a few nifty features you should try out!

Geotagging - When you post to Zannel you can now geotag your post with a location.  This associates location information to a post so you or other users can see it on a map by clicking on that tag.  You can automatically add a geotag to your post by using an iPhone or our iPhone Citywatch application. Or, if you have another mobile handset, add the information to the end of your post yourself by adding the #@ (or #at) tag followed by location information. The geotag…

I admit it, I have lust in my heart for the following new gadgets and gizmos:

Why buy when you can rent?

My BlackBerry died recently and I have to decide what to do about replacing it.  Right now I’m in Miami, carrying around a replacement BlackBerry that really isn’t my style.  It’s bright purple for one, with a ringtone that is strident.  Not that this really matters.  Because the phone isn’t mine, it’s a loaner that I borrowed from the company.  This got me thinking - maybe I shouldn’t buy my next phone but rent one.  After all, I don’t own my own home right now in San Francisco, instead I rent.  Why should my choice of phone be any different? …

Study: Almost 10% On Social Networks Via Mobile

The proportion of U.S. mobile subscribers who access social networks on their cell phones nearly tripled to almost 10% over a year ago, according to a consumer study by The Kelsey Group and ConStat spotlighted Monday by eMarketer.

Specifically, 9.6% of mobile users were connecting to a social network as of October 2008, compared to 3.4% in September 2007. The rapid growth is due in part to the small base of people who are social networking on mobile.

By 2012, eMarketer projects that more than 800 million users worldwide will participate in social networks via their mobile device, up from…
